Aiming High For Business Success

It's a week of meetings this week. Photographer, intern potentials, marketing and graphic designer meetings. I've been flipping between my 'maker hat' and my 'manager hat'. I'm looking at the future direction of the business and creating action plans. Working out where my time is best spent and where I can bring in other people. Getting my head around letting go of some parts of my business, while remaining the designer and creative director of the whole. Anticipating ways I can grow my business while staying true to my vision. My brain is bursting with ideas and excitement!

I am so pleased to be surrounded by such creative and talented women, whom I consider friends. By combining our skills and talents, Christina Lowry Designs is going to become the best jewellery designer, manufacturer and retailer in Australia.

Watch this space!

What's Your Colour Giveaway!

It's the 7th day of the New Year (!), I'm still sorting through holiday snaps, the shop is open again, and my studio is in the middle of a new year clean. How about you? What have you been up to?
With a new year comes a new collection, and I am drawing, planning and working on new designs. I just need a little help. I want to create jewellery that my lovely community will love and wear and I'd love to know what colour jewellery you wear?! Silver, Oxidised Silver, Yellow Gold, Rose Gold, White Gold, a mix? If you have a moment could you please either leave a comment below, head to Facebook, or leave a comment on Instagram?
As a little thank you I am giving away a ring sizing gauge to several commenters chosen at random on Monday. A great little tool to tuck away in your jewellery box!
I've always been a silver girl myself. My engagement and wedding ring are white gold. But lately I find I am mixing in a little bit of gold with my silver, like a yellow gold Elsa ring beside a silver Edith ring, or the rose and white hues of a Beryl necklace. I find the warmth of gold mixed with the coolness of silver can really make some designs pop. But I want to know what you think, what you like to wear?
I'm looking forward to hearing your response!

Giving Thanks & Merry Christmas

I am so blessed to have such a wonderful community around me, supporting and encouraging me in my business and creative dreams; reading my newsletters and blog posts, leaving comments and feed back, sharing my pictures and creations with friends, playing a part in growing my handmade business and of course buying, wearing and gifting my jewellery.

I have long had this dream about working with people to create jewellery that reflects their loves and wishes, their creative side and sentimental side. Jewellery that is made from silver and gold and will be passed down from one generation to another without dating. A dream that involves supporting Australian suppliers and artisans, from the company that creates the gift boxes I use, to the local small businesses that specialise in master engraving and Diamond setting. This dream has been coming true with your help.

How far I have come in the past two years, and how much bigger my dreams are for the future. Thank you again for all your support, big and small, for when doubt and fear creep up on me, I look back over the number of sales I have made during the year and the kind emails I have received, and I persevere.

Already I am filling my sketchbook and journal with ideas for 2016. I hope you will join me again as my creative journey continues.

A wonderful and safe Christmas to you,

Christina xx

PS. Usually we are a 'stay at home for Christmas' kind of family, but this year we have booked eleven days by the beach with interstate family! And so, the Christmas order cut off for my store is today. After today orders will be processed and mailed out after the 4th of January. Today is your last chance to tuck a little Christina Lowry Designs under the Christmas tree!

Instagram For Business and Self

On the back of the post about my Christmas photo shoot, I wanted to share some of the photos I have been taking for Instagram lately, and the little photo shoots I put together for them. When I began Instagram, I took photos as I saw them. I posted them then and there, with no thought as to whether or not anyone was seeing them, if my gallery was beautiful, or what I was trying to achieve with Instagram. And while that is perfectly fine for a personal page, given that my IG is a part of my business, I decided to be more mindful with my time and energy in order to create an account that I could be proud of and that shares the story of my business.  In return I have found that a large majority of my sales now come from Instagram. (So if you have a small business, and you are not yet on Instagram, I urge you to start now. It is not too late!)

At first I was scared that I would loose my audience if I posted too many jewellery photos, but rather the opposite happened. People love to see photos of my jewellery, whether they are behind the scenes peeks in my workshop, pieces being worn, or beautiful still life's and flat lays. Not only has Instagram increased my sales, it has been such a wonderful creative tool for me, offering me a simple way to experiment with photography and styling. I found the wonderful The Photo School Online Class a great way to learn more about iPhone photography and capturing the pretty light. I watched a class with Sue B Zimmerman (the Instagram Expert) and learnt some really valuable information (you can get a free Instagram Strategy Guide on her site). And most recently I took part in the five day Makelight Online Taster Course, dedicated to creating beautiful photographs and flat lays.

I have little vintage bits and bobs all over my home, in printer trays, bowls and baskets, so using them as props made perfect sense. Adding leaves, flowers and berries to my collection is a joy shared with my three year old daughter. Usually once a week, I try to gather up some interesting bits and pieces, take my jewellery out of the safe, and start playing around with different back grounds, props and lighting. Then I edit the pics in VSCOcam, and I have a selection of images waiting to be used in my feed, while also taking photos as the mood takes me, or as I am working.

And it's not just jewellery. Sometimes it's just flowers, a shot of my work bench, or a video of my baby starting to walk. I only have one Instagram account, and it is still my account, just as it is my business and my name on the business cards, so I don't want it to become impersonal. I love the community that is a part of Instagram. I love that being a small business owner means that I am always dealing on a personal level. And I love being able to share my thoughts and creations both here on my blog and on Instagram.

Instagram Enabler

I unabashedly love Instagram. That square format. Those vintagey filters. The eye candy while breastfeeding. The conversations, community and hashtag challenges. A few of my dear friends haven't tried their hand at that modern Instamatic app yet and I think they would really enjoy it if they did. So I am making my case here in an effort to get them to join me. And if you aren't on IG yet, perhaps I will enable you too...

Instagram is a free app that is simple to download with a smart phone. It's easy to use, like a simplified version of Facebook, with the focus on the photos and text captions. (There are no annoying games requests, or birthday reminders, and only the very occasional ad.)

It's a wonderful way to simply record happy snaps, create a visual record of the loveliness in your world, document special family moments, or share your creative work with others. There are so many creative ways you can use the medium too. Perhaps you only post photos with a certain colour theme and feel? Perhaps you post just photos of your shoes? Maybe you post just one photo a month of your baby, so that you can chart their progress as they grow? Perhaps it is a scrapbook of colours and textures? An album of family photos set to private (you can choose to just share your account with friends and family, or make it public)? Or a collection of pics of your food. It's your feed to curate as you wish, with no right or wrong!

You can use it to improve your photography. The more you do something, the better you get at it. So by taking more photos you will develop a keener eye in selecting your content and framing your shot. That pretty light, those interesting shadows, this strange texture and little things you once noticed only in passing will hold your attention for longer and lead to a greater appreciation as you try to capture and share that beauty with others. Or not! There's no pressure.

It's a great source of inspiration! You can follow your friends, celebrities, creatives, strangers, brands and bands. There are such an amazing wealth of images no matter what makes your heart sing and you get to curate your own feed by choosing who you follow. Whether you love craft, books, tools, cooking, yoga or cats, there's an Instagram account for that. There are communities and challenges you can be a part of too. You can share your yoga photos and partake in challenges, as my sister does. You can find your voice and document your unique view of motherhood and capture moments that fade much too quickly like . You can sell your artwork on the site or with a link to your shop - it is such a wonderful platform for small businesses. So many of my wonderful clients have found me on Instagram, and follow me there to keep up to date with what I am working on, and images from my part of the world.

And if those aren't reason enough to promote an Instagram liaison, check out these wonderful accounts -

Morning Pages - an everyday practice

1. Tea, pastries, library books and camellias from the garden - happy days
2. Busy nights at the bench
3. Dew drops like strands of pearls, in a spider's web in our garden

  1. Morning Pages are three pages of longhand, stream of consciousness writing,
done first thing in the morning. *There is no wrong way to do Morning Pages*–
they are not high art. They are not even “writing.” They are about
anything and everything that crosses your mind– and they are for your eyes
only. Morning Pages provoke, clarify, comfort, cajole, prioritize and
synchronize the day at hand. Do not over-think Morning Pages: just put
three pages of anything on the page…and then do three more pages tomorrow. - Julia Cameron
My first week of morning pages has been disappointing, and yet I'm committing to the daily practice long term.

I've heard mention of 'morning pages' over the years from so many creatives that I admire, and after Pip's encouragement last week I committed to the daily practice. A morning routine that allows one to clean out their mind and allow for more creativity and greater focus throughout the day? A way to discover buried thoughts after hitting the magic three pages? A way to gain perspective, keep your thoughts on track and anchor new habits? Yes please!

Pip advises that the key to successful morning pages is getting up early and getting straight to it. Rising early to have a quiet house to yourself. Only, I am not a morning person. I'm only awake before the sun because I have three early risers. I'm much more of a tea and blankets morning person, preferring to snuggle in and cuddle my babies for as long as possible. More often than not I will pop out of bed to boil the jug, grab my overnight oats from the fridge, and jump back in to bed. But I was prepared to change for my creative betterment.

And so I did on Monday morning. With tea and notebook I sat at the kitchen table in a quiet house. Then five minutes later all three children joined me and demanded breakfast. I scrawled a sentence here and there, but it was far from stream of conscious. I was coming down with a cold and Cohen was sporting a runny nose and a cough, so I declared a sick day. As the day progressed the cold got worse. Monday I did not write three pages.

Tuesday I'd optimistically planned to awaken earlier and put pen to paper. However, at 11 pm Cohen had his first wheezing asthma attack and I spent half the night standing in his door way listening to his breathing. I slept badly and dragged my cold-addled self to the table and wrote my sleepy sentences at 5 am when the baby woke. We got the first available doctors appointment. I did not write three pages.

In fact all week, despite my best efforts, I did not write three pages. I gave up sitting at the kitchen table and kept my book on my bedside table and wrote in bed if I could. I wrote with tea. I wrote with a baby on my lap. I wrote between making breakfasts, lunch boxes, changing nappies and wiping up spilt milk. I grumbled. I wrote in my pages, 'surely Julia Cameron wasn't envisioning morning writing with three children under six'.

Looking over the week's pages I felt disappointed that I had not achieved my task of writing three pages each day. I wallowed in that feeling of failure for awhile. Then I made a greater realisation and found the positive. I HAD achieved something equally wonderful. I had managed to write everyday, despite what life threw at me. I might not have hit the magic third page, but each day I had written two pages and captured thoughts, ideas, to dos, memories, complaints, plans for new collections in fourteen handwritten pages I may not have written otherwise. And I felt good. And I committed to the practice. Maybe I will write three pages, maybe I won't. But I will keep trying, because an attempt is better than nothing.

The Process - from sketch to finished piece

Joy
The 'Joy' Pendant and Earrings are the final pieces in the 'Sentimental Collection' and they are now in the shop. For those not familiar with the process of making jewellery, I thought I would run through the various stages of creating these pieces. If you are anything like me, you may enjoy a peek behind the scenes of a jeweler at work.

'Ideas become things.' First piece of a doily inspired collection completed! Really excited to be back at the bench and to be turning my sketches in to Jewellery. (Due for release in time for Mother's Day.) #handmadejewellery #wip #copyright #christinalow
Initially, there were several designs sketched in my sketchbook as I slowly built on my ideas for a doily inspired collection featuring drilled and punched details. I developed a set of stacking rings, a pendant and necklace, a pair of hoops, and of course the 'Joy' pendant and earrings.

Sneak peek... Five copper Masters to be sent off to have rubber moulds made. They will then be cast up in silver and gold. Can't wait to get these pieces back and add the finishing pieces to them! #handmadejewellery #wip #silversmith #thedoilycollection
The next step is to start realising these drawings in metal. This means sketching out the designs on sheets of metal and saw them out, filing and shaping them, and then in this case, drilling and punching them. Because I planned on making more than once of each piece, and in order to keep each piece identical and lower production costs, I made 'Masters' for each piece from copper. These masters were then sent away to be professionally moulded and cast in Sterling Silver and 9ct Rose Gold, before being returned to be hand finished.

Oooh, the castings have arrived for the 'Sentimental' Collection! I love seeing my copper masters come back in silver and rose gold. Can't wait to get started on these! #jewellery #casting #newcollection
This is how the castings return. They have the remains of the sprues on them, where the metal was poured in to the moulds, and a slightly rough textured finish. The next step is to saw and file off the sprues, emery (jewellers sandpaper) the surfaces and hand make the findings necessary to complete each piece - such as the ear wires and jump rings. These fittings are then soldered on and the entire piece is polished - first using a goats hair polishing wheel with tripoli compound to remove the scratches remaining from the emery, then a cotton polishing mop with rouge compound to create a high shine finish.

On my bench tonight - custom order opal ring and new pieces in progress for the Sentimental Collection. There will be three new designs in the shop soon. :) #handmadejewellery #sentimentalcollection #silversmith
You can see the pieces in the middle have had the sprues removed and have been emeried. They have also been stamped 925 on the reverse - which is the standard mark for Sterling Silver and means that the piece is 92.5% pure Silver. They are now ready to have their ear wires, jump rings and pearl posts soldered on.

Tonight on the bench: a secret custom order piece that I can't show you yet, and the new pearl collection coming together for the shop. #handmadejewellery #instasmithy #instajeweller #silversmith #pearls #thesentimentalcollection
Wires, posts and bails in place, the Silver pendants and earrings are ready for another touch of emery before being polishing. First though, I check that the pearl posts are the right length and trim them down to size to fit the half drilled round Freshwater Pearls.

Sneak peek! The final pieces of the 'Sentimental Collection' will be in the shop this afternoon and feature beautiful round pearls. The 'Joy' Earrings $190 and Pendant $180, will also be available in Rose Gold soon ($280, $260) and can be ordered in Yello
Ta-dah! The finished product. Polished, a satin finish applied with a fine emery, and pearls glued in to position on the posts with a two part epoxy.

I hope that gave you some insight in to the process of a piece of cast jewellery from start to finish, and that you enjoyed this peek in to the workshop. I'm more than happy to answer any questions you might have.

If you have ever fancied trying your hand at making your own silver and gold jewellery, there are some great courses out their run through private schools, TAFE's and Universities. For me, nothing beats the satisfaction of designing and creating a piece of jewellery.

'Beautiful Day' Brooches + a catch up

Sunday night at my house. #madebyhand
Working on some more brooches. Any words in particular you think I should add to the collection? So far I have knit, quilter, handmade, crafter and craft.   #marketprep #handmade #finderskeepersbrisbane
New brooches in progress - embossed with doilies, marbled or with hand stamped lettering. Made from art clay. What do you think? #brooch #handmade
One for me - Silver-smith. #handmade #brooch #finderskeepersbrisbane #marketprep

My life lately has predominately revolved around children, domestic concerns and Finders Keepers Market preparation, (but not blogging, it would seem). It is the life of a stay at home Mama, with a small creative business. Full of routines and surprises, satisfaction and drudgery, creativity and preparation. My little darlings have certainly been keeping me occupied. While my precious 20 month old Emerson discovers the joys of stealing caster sugar from the pantry, or flinging drawers full of clothing on the floor, my almost-five-year-old Cohen has been testing his independence, and practicing the art of selective hearing. (A friend once said that you can tell when children are ready for school, because at least once a day you wish you could send them. Oh, how I understand!)

Apart from Mothering, I have managed to read a few books - and can recommend The Yarn Whisperer (for lovers of knitting) and The Forgotten Garden (an easy, enjoyable read). I've planted a few seedlings in the veggie patch - silver beet, onion, rhubarb and beads - while the self sown tomatoes are going strong, the parsley has taken over the compost pile, the capsicum is fruiting in large quantities and the sweet potato is threatening to take over more of the garden that I had anticipated. I've added some delicious new meals to our meal plan, after falling in to the habit of cooking the same ten meals over and over. I've caught up with some of the amazing women in my life at book club and a crafty morning tea. And of course, I've washed basket after basket of laundry, wiped up cup after cup of spilt milk, prepared approximately 2,000 meals, picked up several tonnes of toys and worked on stock, packaging and all manner of other things related to market prep.

Which leads me to the pictures above. While cuddling Emerson to sleep recently I decided I needed a lower price pointed product for the Brisbane market. Something sweet for everyday wear, that would also make a great gift or stocking stuffer. I mulled over several possibilities before hitting on the idea of making brooches from the same art clay I make the beads from. As soon as Emerson was asleep I started experimenting with clay, doilies and lettering. These new 'Beautiful Day' brooches are the result. Affordable cuteness at $12 each. I'll be bringing them to the market with me and updating the shop in the aftermath. There's a mixture of embossed doilie patterns, marbled clay designs and text, like 'knit', 'maker', 'quilter' and 'craft'. Though I'm happy to take custom orders too.

Oh, and look, here I am on the Finders Keepers blog.

Instagram Snippets

+

1. On one of the worst days I have had recently, where nothing would go right and I could not seem to get myself out of the terrible mood I'd fallen in to, yellow roses, children's naps and cups of tea did the trick.
2. Making beads for the market - so fun and relaxing too.
3. A canvas painted for me by my dear boy. Self portrait, while walking a dog on a path next to grass, with sky, clouds and sun. Heart melts.
4. Blocks of colour and possibility.
5. Tea pot pendants and brooches in progress.
6. Hokey Pokey biscuits with honey instead of golden syrup - because we had run out. Both children approved, as did I.
7. Dinner from the garden - a simple veggie stir fry - quick, delicious and healthy.
8. Wise words from the Brisbane Writers Festival - If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need.
9. Strawberries from the garden - we are averaging a punnet every day or two. Sometimes they only make it as far as the outside tap, where little hands rinse them and eat them. The rest of the time they find their way on to our breakfast.

Big Hearted Business in Brisbane

Think I have a bit of a girl crush on the lovely, amusing and generous @clarebowditch ... So wonderful to see @paravent @alittlevintagedoll @yardagedesign @sarahrochford at the morning tea today. I'm feeling inspired and excited about the direction my han
+

For many years Clare Bowditch had a dream to 'teach creative people about business, and business people about creativity, in ways that make sense.' That dream is becoming a reality as her business venture, Big Hearted Business, grows. As a jeweller and one woman business, trying to make a carer from my creativity, I knew I wanted to hear the wisdom Clare has earnt on her own journey.  And so I eagerly attended the Brisbane Big Hearted Business morning tea, taking my place in the old theatre seats, surrounded by creative talent. I'm so pleased that I did.

With honesty, humour and generosity, Clare spoke about dreams, community, careers, marketing, networking and money. She asked, 'what is your dream'? A simple question to which I thought I already knew the answer. Funny how the simple questions can throw you. When I started to write it down, I was surprised by my response. She continued, discussing the process of growing that dream with "tiny consistent actions" and declaring that all successful businesses needed, "The three M's. Money, marketing and mental awesomeness."

I left the talk feeling energised and inspired, having reached new conclusions, ready to push myself out of my comfort zone. However, it was the post morning tea discussions with Kylie, Nic and Jennie that really cemented those thoughts and pushed me even further. Without Nic's suggestion, and Kylie and Jennie's encouragement, I may have continued to talk myself out of one dream in particular. I didn't think I was ready, I thought it was too soon, too big a financial gamble - but I am going to take the risk and apply for the Brisbane Finders Keepers markets. I'm really very excited about it, and nervous too. They may not accept my application. But I won't know unless I try!

So, if things go quiet around here it's because I am writing my application, working at the jewellery bench and designing my market table. You can keep up to date over on instagram. :)

Sisters, Naps and Somersaults

Pretty weeds and vintage medicine and poison bottles. #cornersofmyhome

I've been at a loose end these past few days. I can't shake the feeling that I should be doing 'something', but I'm unable to pin point exactly what that might be. Despite the ever present to-do list, I have lost my motivation, which leads to feelings of guilt. I've also been feeling the need to slow down, listen to my body and not do much of anything. I think it's a mixture of Winter blues, broken sleep and extra night feeds with Emerson - who is teething, as well as the challenges of raising a four year old. Oh, how beautiful and frustrating four year old boys can be! I have been trying to ignore the guilt and give myself permission to rest. We have been staying home, pottering, cleaning, playing, drawing and knitting.

And while it has been just what I needed, after a few days the guilt crept in about keeping the children at home with me, and not taking them out to do 'something'. So yesterday, I bundled us off to my sisters house for the day. A beautiful, sunny day. While my guilt was allayed, my tiredness was not. Darling sister that she is, she let me sneak off for a nap while she amused the children. That afternoon all four of us were doing somersaults on a Yoga mat on the lounge room floor. The children's eyes lit up and the house filled with laughter. Have you ever seen a four year old and a sixteen month old trying to do somersaults?! It's the most precious and amusing thing.

Thank goodness for sisters, naps and somersaults.
Happy weekend dear readers.
