Cute Crochet Flower DIY

As the weather warms and wool and leggings are being replaced by short sleeves and skirts, Emerson's home made wardrobe was missing a few staples. I wanted a few t-shirts to mix and match with her skirts and shorts, but I didn't want too bright prints, lots of glitter and graffiti or lots of pink. A hard ask when looking at the girls department. I did find some sweet tops at Target with crochet embellishments on them for $18, which inspired this little homemade version. I picked up this plain T-shirt for $4 and had the acrylic yarn in my stash.

A little hooking and stitching later and Emerson has a sweet, thrifty new t-shirt and a happy Mama!

Simple, quick, cute and thrifty! I crocheted up these little flowers, making them up as I went, then played with the arrangement and stitched them on. I wrote the patterns down for you too. I think these little flowers would be just as sweet on hair clips, cardigans or hair ties.

 

 

5 Petal Crochet Flower

 

8 ply 3.5mm hook

Chain 4, Slip stitch to join - creating a loop

Chain 1, 8 Single Crochet in to hole, join

Chain 3, 2 Double Crochet in to next stitch, slip stitch in to next stitch, 3 Double Crochet in to next stitch, continue until last stitch, slip stich, cut thread and pull though loop to finish.

Weave in ends.

 

Chain 4, Slip stitch to join - creating a loop

 

Chain 1, 8 Single Crochet in to hole, join

 

Chain 3, 2 Double Crochet in to next stitch, slip stitch in to next stitch, 3 Double Crochet in to next stitch
 

Continue until last stitch, slip stich, cut thread and pull though loop to finish.

4 Petal Flower

 

8 ply 2.5mm hook

Chain 4, slip stitch to create a loop

Chain 3, 2 Double Crochet in to hole, slip stitch, 3 Double Crochet, SS, 3 DC, SS, 3 DC, SS, cut thread and pull tail through loop to finish.

Weave in ends.

My Creative Space

Although I have been mainly knitting of late, I did finish this crochet ripple cot blanket for a friend's gorgeous baby girl. It was lovely to get out the hook again. It really is so much quicker than the needles. And I do believe that every baby needs a handmade blanket.

Right now...

It's a strange and foggy morning today, after the smokey days and hazy skies of late. Asthma puffer by my side as I type...

There's last minute wedding crafting going on in these parts, of the 'happy hanger' variety. Though mine look a little different and I'm not sure why.

While picking up one last ball of white yarn for the hexagon blanket, all yarns were 40% off. I brought an extra eight balls for a baby blanket. I'm thinking a ripple.

Cohen now has a toy Doctor set, complete with stethoscope and syringe. It's amazing watching his imagination unfold and his understanding growing through repetition. He has been checking the health of his favourite toys or calling out 'Doctor Doctor' before listening to the babies heart beat or giving me a needle, then rubbing my arm better. My sweet little Doctor.

Five sleeps until the wedding!

My Creative Space

More washcloth crochet and knitting. Simple and practical. Just what I need at the moment. I'm low on energy and motivation, but it's still nice to have a little something to work on. I've started using these washcloths with Cohen and I must say I have been converted. These will certainly be a go to couch craft in future.

This little project has been thrown into my bag at the last moment many times lately, with a stolen stitch here and there while in the passenger seat, over a cup of tea, or any moments spent waiting. A ball of wool, a hook and the shawl are small additions to the dark depths of my nappy bag. There are only two rows of the pattern to memorise and both are super simple. 

Which adds up to one lovely finished shawl.

My Creative Space...

I have finished the 'I heart fans' scarf I designed and am awaiting the cold weather.

In my creative space today I have been writing down the pattern and if you are interested in trying this design I have included it below and will add it to the side bar.

It is an easy pattern, consisting only of ch - chains, single, Dbl - double and Trpl - triple crochet stitches.

You can use any size hook or yarn for this project.

I choose a thicker hook for the yarn to give it a lacier look.

'I heart fans' scarf

Ch 25 plus 2.

Row 1 - Dbl into 3rd ch from hook, Dbl into each stitch until end, ch3, turn.

Row2 - Trpl into first nine stitches, skip 3 stitches, 4 Dbl into next stitch, Ch1 and 4 Dbl (all in the one stitch), Trpl into next nine stitches to end, ch3, turn.

Row 3 - Trpl into next 9 stitches, single crochet into chain space between the two lots of 4 Dbl on previous row, ch 3, Trpl into next 9 stitches until end, turn.

Repeat Row2 and Row3 alternatively until scarf is desired length.

Please let me know if you find any errors in the pattern.

The last stitch...

I am afraid my photography skill or lack of has been severely tested today!

A finished mustard throw, a brown lounge and an overcast day do not seem to add up to a great photo. So you will have to trust me that it looks nice laying over the lounge, and it feels so snugly and lovely being 100% wool.

It is such a great feeling too for it to be finished, ends woven in, and ready for some cool weather.

The design reminds me of snakes and ladders and the pattern is very simple and only requires two stitches;

chain stitch (Ch) and double crochet (Dbl).

Row 1- Ch odd no. to desired width, plus ch 3. Turn.

Row 2- 1 Dbl crochet in fourth ch from hook, 1 Dbl crochet into each chain until end. Turn.

Row3- Ch 3, 1 Dbl into first stitch and 1 Dbl crochet into each stitch until end. Turn.

Row4- Ch 4 (counts as 1 Bbl and ch1), 1 Dbl crochet into third stitch, Ch 1, miss next stitch, 1 Dbl crochet into next stitch, Ch 1, skip next stitch, 1 Dbl crochet into next stitch. Continue until end. Turn. Ch 3.

Repeat Row 2 - 4 until desired size.

As this is the first pattern I have ever written I hope it makes sense and welcome any feedback. I think this would look great in stripes of colour as well...

Edit: I used a 5.00 mm crochet hook and 10 balls of 50 gram 8 ply wool for this project and my finished piece is approximately 100 x 80 cm.
