What's Your Colour Giveaway!

It's the 7th day of the New Year (!), I'm still sorting through holiday snaps, the shop is open again, and my studio is in the middle of a new year clean. How about you? What have you been up to?

With a new year comes a new collection, and I am drawing, planning and working on new designs. I just need a little help. I want to create jewellery that my lovely community will love and wear and I'd love to know what colour jewellery you wear?! Silver, Oxidised Silver, Yellow Gold, Rose Gold, White Gold, a mix? I've always been a silver girl myself. My engagement and wedding ring are white gold. But lately I find I am mixing in a little bit of gold with my silver, like a yellow gold Elsa ring beside a silver Edith ring, or the rose and white hues of a Beryl necklace. I find the warmth of gold mixed with the coolness of silver can really make some designs pop. But I want to know what you think, what you like to wear?

It's been a crafty kind of week this week, with new pieces for the shop, preparation for the French Market on Saturday, air dry clay craft, painting and preserving. This week I am looking forward to indulging in some Christmas baking with Cohen and Emerson, working on some bigger pieces for the shop and a spot of knitting too.

Kate has utilized her talents to create a beautiful and practical book about retro caravan holidays in the modern world. Where did the name Alexandra MackeNZie  come from... Alexandra Mackenzie are my middle names, both are family names and I always thought they sounded a wee bit fancy. So when choosing I name for my little empire I didn't want to use my name, but didn't want something completely random either so Alexandra Mackenzie fit perfectly and the hidden NZ in Mackenzie was an added bonus.

My Shop Is... Something I am really proud of, know that people from all over the world are browsing buying and now making my items gives me a huge kick, there are hottie bottles all over the world keeping toes warm with my covers on them.

I now have two shops, one full of ready-made and custom made home wares and accessories and a brand spanking new one for my patterns.

Seeing people create with my patterns... Is fab and a little freaky, still quite new to me as I haven't been selling the patterns for long. I love seeing other peoples colour combos, like Christina's cushions, love them particularly the green one, I could take that one home with me!!

I learnt to crochet... From Youtube, just a couple of quick granny square tutorials and I was away, I had tried to learn from books but had failed miserably. I didn't learn to follow patterns, rather just try and make my own ideas a reality.

Some of my favourite things I have made are... Quite often the last thing I made, tend to fall in love with things pretty easily but have to tell myself I cant keep everything.

Lately its the hexi potholders, I am making one with hearts at the moment which I suspect might knock the Hexis off their perch. The hottie bottle is always a favourite and the most popular thing in the store too.

Our shop is... a place where we sell all of our favourite things! We love anything fun, creative and a little bit quirky and we want to share these beautiful things with our lovely customers. We sell a select range of design-led stationery, craft supplies, accessories and homewares from here and abroad. We hope that whenever we sell something to someone they love it as much as we do and that it makes their day a little brighter! (And whose life isn’t vastly improved by an adorable Jackalope, a pretty new necklace or a stack of washi tape?)

 

 

The best part of working with my sister... is that while we both have very similar taste when it comes to craft and design, in other ways we are very different, which is great when it comes to making decisions about what products to buy and how to style them for the shop. We both have our strengths and we are lucky that they are different for both of us. Sarah is the resident stylist and photographer while Lauren loves hunting down new products for the shop. Plus we get along so well with each other that it’s kind of like working with your BFF, which is lots of fun!

 

 

We find inspiration... everywhere! We’re both addicted to reading blogs, books and magazines. We especially love reading Simply Crochet, Uppercase, Kinfolk and Extra Curricular. We also get lots of inspiration from other cultures and are obsessed with anything Japanese or Scandinavian. (And who couldn’t love the land that brought us both Shibori and Hello Kitty?)

 

Our favourite three items in our shop are... the Coffee Dance Mug from Gemma Correll’s Pickle Parade range, all of our Japanese MT Masking Tapes (they’re the original and the best washi tapes) and the MoTEX Embossing Label Maker- it reminds us of our 80’s childhood and can be used to label literally anything!

 

 

If I had to pick one craft and only one, I would choose...

Sarah: At present I would have to choose crochet. I tend to have many crafts on the go but this is the one I always go back to as it is so relaxing to do in front of the TV. I’ve also loved the chance to make some lovely crochet rugs for my baby daughter.

Lauren: I would probably choose sewing as the possibilities of what you can create are endless! I’m currently working on a range of homewares for the shop and it’s great fun picking out pretty fabrics and then deciding what to turn them into.

 

We came up with the idea of opening our store...  because we had trouble buying the things that we loved here in Brisbane. Plus we’d always wanted to work together in some way so we thought we’d just go for it and open up our own little shop full of happy, crafty things!

Sussan - $100 Gift Voucher Giveaway - Closed

Recently I indulged in a little shopping for myself, to celebrate my new glasses, symbolic as they are of putting eye surgery and recovery behind me. I wandered the shops with my two little ones and spotted the perfect shade of mustard/ chartreuse/ acid lemon through the doorway of Sussan. I ventured in and discovered a beautiful scarf, which had clearly been waiting all day for me to hurry up and find it, knowing how much I would love it. I ventured further in to the store. Mustard tights? On sale?! I added them to the scarf. Someone has been reading my fashion-mind!

The sales assistant greeted me cheerfully, she smiled as Cohen told her his name and age - if you ever meet him you can expect the same - and then told me about the sale items. I ventured further in to the store. And there, all alone and obviously waiting for me, or so I would like to think, a perfectly lovely chevron cardigan (which has since received compliments each time I've worn it.) I tried it on as the sales assistant chatted pleasantly with Cohen and I, and offered her assistance.

With Cohen's approval I made my purchases, feeling pleased with the ease of it all. Having worked for some years in retail jewellery stores I really appreciate good customer service. Even more so since becoming a Mama. Once home I sent an email to Sussan's, complimenting them on their clothes and service, and asking if they would be willing to offer one of my readers a similar experience. "A graphic designer with an intense love of fabric, a crafter with a
huge fascination with printing... it was only logical that someday I
would start designing and hand printing my own textiles. Muted tones,
dramatic shades and natural fibers; improvisational and beautifully
organic quilting; toys that are as cuddly as they are unique - that is
what Maze & Vale is all about. Designs are originally created as
sketches or carved block prints and become screen prints that I pull
by hand in my one room studio. My obsession with colour is fulfilled
by custom mixing shades with my own hands using environmentally
friendly, water based textile inks and printing them on natural fibers
of cotton and linen."

"Hello there, I'm Anna from Perth, Western Australia. I live with my fiance and naughty kitty cat. When I'm not making jewellery I'm in the veggie patch growing lovely organic vegetables, or reading a good book with a hot tea in one hand! 

I opened my Etsy shop last year after I was feeling stifled working in a government job. Working on my jewellery pieces gives my right brain a workout and gives me a sense of satisfaction that my job doesn't. My fiance lends me practical supports with the shop, encouraging me to expand, improve and acting as quality control on my packaging before it gets popped in the post. 

All of my pieces are inspired by nature. Those who know me well know that I am a lover of animals and bush land, so it was only natural (excuse the pun!) that I would make nature themed jewellery. I have recently branched out into making jewellery out of eco-friendly wood. I'm hugely excited by this, and the hippy within me can't stop doing a little happy dance."

Melbourne based illustrator Simone Downy creates whimsical art prints and greeting cards of deer, bunnies, foxes, owls, bears and other cute creatures. Her label, Nomuu, is characterised by her use of pastel tones and ink pen lines. The adorable animal children that appear in her art works make them perfect gifts for little people or expecting Mama's.

12 Days of Christmas Giveaway - Day two

"Hello! I’m Nic (Nicole), and I’m a textile designer with my own little label called Yardage Design which has been around since 2009. When I’m not designing, screen printing or sewing, I am a mum to an (almost) 6 year old and wife to an engineer. I hand print a small range of home wares (mainly tea towels and market bags at the moment, with plans to expand) and fabric, with my own designs. I print on natural fibers like linen, cotton and hemp, and, at the moment, I am a bit obsessed with neon pink!"

I already have two of Nic's gorgeous tea towels wrapped up under the tree, as they make lovely gifts. (I have one put aside to frame and hang in the kitchen after we have renovated too!)
